When you're building a high rev or high hp engine, you are adding a significant increase in pressure to the crankshaft journal. The bearings job is to transfer that load while maintaining its shape under tremendous pressure and heat. When I worked on engine builds going into the thousands HP range it was very important that our rod and main tolerances were correct. To much gap and you spin a bearing, too little of a gap and you don't provide proper lubrication and cooling you can spin a bearing or worse, overheat the rod until it fails causing you have a hole in the side of your block.
